Citizenship by Marriage

Becoming an Italian citizen is more than just a legal procedure; it is a gateway to a world-renowned heritage and the global opportunities of an EU passport.  One of the most common pathways to achieving this is through Italian citizenship by marriage (officially known as Jure Matrimonii). In Italy, this is primarily governed by Articles 5, 6, 7, and 8 of Law n. 91 of 1992. These statutes outline the right of a foreign spouse or partner to become an Italian citizen, provided certain stability and residency requirements are met.

By recognizing civil unions as equivalent to marriage in the context of citizenship, Italian law ensures that all couples, regardless of gender, can share the same heritage and benefits.

However, the path through Italian bureaucracy is often complex. At Citizens of Italy, we specialize in accompanying our clients through every step of the citizenship application process, ensuring a seamless transition from applicant to citizen.

Eligibility and Timeframes

The first step in the process is understanding the residency and duration requirements. Under Italian law, the time you must wait to apply depends on where you live:

The "Children Factor"

A significant benefit exists for families: if the couple has biological or legally adopted minor children, the required timeframes are reduced by 50%. This means you could apply in as little as 1 year if living in Italy, or 1.5 years if living abroad.

The Document Checklist

Gathering the "Paperwork" is often where applicants feel most overwhelmed. A standard application requires:
